This past March I had the pleasure of meeting Bobby Vernick at the 2017 National Scouting Combine. Bobby entered the 2017 National Scouting Combine after finishing up his fourth season at Slippery Rock. Amongst a stellar career at Slippery Rock, Vernick is a side line to side line linebacker that has the speed and agility to play the linebacker position at a high level. Vernick was one of the top performers at the combine, and posted better scores in nearly all categories within his linebacker class.
- 40 yard dash: 4.86
- Shuttle: 4.38
- Bench Press: 29 reps
- Broad Jump: 9′ 8″
- Vertical Jump: 32
When asked about how he trained and prepared for the National Scouting Combine Vernick stated
“I trained with a personal trainer everyday called Grossetti Performance in New Castle, PA. Most days I would train twice a day. I made sure I was getting proper nutrition, proper rest, and was recovering properly.”
On the field Vernick is a tackling machine and has a list of awards and honors to back it up. Bobby was an all-conference and all-state linebacker in high school at Butler High. Vernick also applauds himself for having one of the highest GPA’s on the team throughout his high school career and earned academic honors.
The Slippery Rock alum was a four year starter playing mostly as an outside linebacker. In 3 years of Vernick’s college career, he finished within the top 3 of tackling statistics, finishing with a grand total of 243 over his four year career. Vernick earned academic honors throughout his 4 years at Slippery Rock, and was also a part of several championship contending teams.
Vernick prides himself on being a well-rounded and fundamental player. As you will see in Vernick’s high school highlight film, he possesses side line to side line speed to shorten the field, agility and game knowledge in coverage, and aggression mixed with fundamentals that makes him a sure fire tackler.
As a selected team captain, Vernick is recognized as a leader and inspirational player on and off the field. Bobby is a vastly different person on and off the field. On the field Vernick is tough and gritty claiming “I have that killer instinct: eat or be eaten, some people have it some don’t, I got it”. Then you meet Bobby off the field to find a humble intelligent individual with a drive for a success.
Bobby is in the works of finishing up his exercise science degree from Slippery Rock and hopes to continue his love for fitness and sport in his future, as well as eventually obtain a job in the medical field.
Since his final season at “The Rock” and competing in the National Scouting Combine, Vernick has been reached out to by several teams varying in leagues. Vernick is a lightning rod on the field that will be given a chance to play professionally in the near future.
